| August 26 and 27, 2008 I'm finished!.. I think. Yesterday I finished the blue stripes in the water and made some subtle changes to the composition. Today I put the light blue in the wave's claws. I could go on forever painting blue, then white, fussing with the lines, making the edges harder. So I decided to declare victory knowing I can go back and work on it some more if something really bugs me. I am very happy with it. It was a fun project. I signed it real small with an ink pen...Karen Spratt after Hokusai. |

August 21, 2008 - Today I started going over the blue again. I added the lighter blue strips into the wave. I messed up a lot of the white dots, so I'll be doing them again. The project is really fun, but I'm tired tonight. I worked for about three and half hours and made many trips up and down the ladder. I wanted to get lots done today because I won't be working on the door again until next Monday or Tuesday. This weekend I'll be at the Palo Alto Art Festival. |

August 20, 2008 Yesterday and today I worked on the background, or sky. I asked that the door be painted yellow, knowing that was the basic color I wanted for the background. At the top I blended the yellow with raw sienna to get a dark color. At the bottom I blended it with white to lighten it. I also put in the dots under the wave's claws, but they are hard to see from far away. I found the best way to do the dots is with my finger. First I did them in raw sienna. Then over that I put white, trying to leave a little ring of raw sienna around the edges. Not very many people talk to me while I'm out there. Today was the chattiest day. A lot of people told me I was doing a good job. One guy quizzed me on who did the original wave. And a woman told me that a lot of tattoo artists would be impressed with my work. |

| August 18, 2008 As the afternoon skies clouded over, I wondered if I should paint on the door today. Rain was the last thing I thought I would have to worry about when I started this project. I had to go to the art store for other things and ended up looking at paint brushes. I bought 2 that would be perfect for working on the door. Then, of course I had to go try them out. As I started painting the sun came out. I just worked on the white today. I doesn't look much different, except when you get close to it. The yellow doesn't show through the white like it used to. |

| August 14, 2008 I got lots done today. Even though it was a hot day, there's a nice breeze up on the ladder. The whole wave is on the door, but it isn't nearly finished. The painting is pretty rough and I want to refine. I also need to work on the sky, which will remain mostly yellow. In order to paint the far right hand side of the door, I have to shut it all the way. Then I can't slide the door open because the paint is wet! Luckily Phil was working in the gallery and he helped me carry the ladder around and through the front door. I don't think I'll get to work on it again until Monday. In the meantime, I'll be looking for the other 2 colors I need to finish it. It looks good from across the river. |

| August 13, 2008 Today when I arrived at the gallery, I had to decide if I should continue with the blue or start in on the white. I chose white. I was just too anxious to see how it would look with the blue. So the wave still stops abruptly on the right side. My pictures aren't very clear today. But there I am with my ladder. I'm starting to wonder if the blue is too dark. |
